University’s Founding
The University of Houston was founded in 1927 at the junction of Texas’ two major railroad lines. College Athletics
The University of Houston Athletics Department announced on March 10, 2011 that it would be joining the Big East Conference, effective July 1, 2013. The news came as a surprise to many, as the school had been a member of Conference USA since 1996. The move to the Big East will give the university’s athletic programs increased exposure and access to more competitive conference opponents. The athletics department is also expected to receive a boost in funding from the conference. Funding for the department has been an issue in recent years, as the university has struggled to keep up with the expenses of running a Division I athletics program. The move to the Big East is expected to help the athletics department become more self-sufficient.
